The banter back at the bar had almost felt like flirting. Okay, it definitely was flirting. But I didn't want to get my hopes up. Just because we weren't calling each other by our last names anymore didn't mean that she was interested in me.

And anyway.

This was a work-related visit.

She wasn’t here to sleep with me tonight.

No matter how much I’d like that.

But I pushed aside my thoughts of how much I wanted Julia and focused on how much I wanted to help her. As hard as it was to admit, this whole thing was more than just desire. I felt terrible about Julia's grandfather, and I wanted to help him and all the other people who suffered from this debilitating illness.

Julia’s phone rang as she got out of the car and she answered it.

“What? Oh no. Is it bad? Should I come?”

She listened for a moment.

“Okay. I’ll be by for my usual visit tomorrow then.”

Her face was troubled as she approached, but I didn't want to pry. I watched as she shook off whatever news she'd had and smiled at me as she walked up the steps.

"Wow," she said, a stunned expression on her face as I scanned my retina, and the door opened.

“What the hell, Ghost, you come from money or something?”

Yeah, I might have bought an enormous, expensive house that was way too big for me and not at all what I needed or wanted. It was a mistake. But I didn't see how I could back out now. The colossal thing was like something you see on those shows about the rich and famous people. I kind of hated it.

But I loved the lab.

“Nah,” I said, hanging my coat in the closet. “I made an impulse buy based on the retina scanner. Plus, there was tons of room to put in a private lab.”

She laughed.

“No, but seriously,” she said, keeping pace beside me.

"I've always saved my money. I didn't really have anything to spend it on. Then when I realized that I didn't know how to get out of hockey, I suddenly wanted a place where I could have my own lab."

“It’s impressive.”

"Yeah, but it was a mistake," I said, cutting my eyes over to meet hers. "I don't know what I was thinking."

“Where’s all the staff it must take to keep a place like this up?”

“No staff,” I said. “A cleaning crew comes in once in a while. And also a maintenance crew to look after the grounds and the outside of the house. That’s it.”

“You’re all alone in this place?” She almost seemed to be tiptoeing so that her footsteps wouldn’t echo. It was kind of pathetic, but I didn't want her to feel sorry for me.

“No, there’s Mr. Brighteyes,” I said.

“Mr. Brighteyes? Who’s he?”

“She’s my cat. And she loves this place.”

“She?”

"Apparently, a kid named her before she was given to the shelter."

“I see.”

“Unfortunate, but I wasn’t going to change her name. I mostly call her Bright.”

I started calling the cat, and there was a mrrrow from somewhere on the second floor.
